A new lease of life
In a nutshell, THE DEVIL’S ROCK now has its own dedicated YouTube Channel (just follow the link), where, if we can amass 500+ subscribers – remember, it won’t cost you anything to subscribe – we can post the film so that it can be watched completely free and entirely legally. Not only that, we’ll also be uploading sundry other items: ‘making of’ items, previously unseen footage, behind the scenes material and so on.

It took only 15 days to shoot and cost only £275,000 to make, which commentators considered remarkable given its high grade finish, and it garnered some great reviews, and yet it suffered appallingly at the hands of internet pirates. The illegally uploaded version of was downloaded phenomenal numbers of times. One YouTube channel alone boasted up to 3.1 million views, another one 900,000.

It is probably worth noting here, that had we received just £1 for each of those views, the movie would have made its money back ten times over.
However, now that the rights have reverted to Paul Campion’s own company, Chameleon Pictures, you can at last see the movie without having to pay for it but entirely legally. Though, as I say, at least 500+ of you first need to hit the subscribe button, which – and yes, apologies for reminding you again – will cost you nothing.
Hopefully, those unfamiliar with THE DEVIL’S ROCK will already have checked out some of the stills and screengrabs in this column and must surely be a little bit intrigued.
The original idea was inspired by the grimoires, several books of ancient occultic lore, which have been preserved from the late Middle Ages and are still available to be seen in museums on the Channel Islands. Director Paul Campion and I devised the idea from there, creating a fictional Channel Island, Forau, at the north end of the archipelago, and setting our tale in 1944, at which point in time a massive German gun emplacement poses a huge threat to the impending Allied invasion of Normandy.
On June 5, the eve of D-Day, two New Zealand commandoes, veterans of the Long Range Desert Group, land on the island under cover of darkness, literally hours before the Allied armada sails, to destroy the titanic weapon … only to discover a labyrinthine bunker system, wherein a senior SS officer who has been experimenting with black magic rituals has managed to invoke a terrifying demonic power, which not only poses a threat to the Allies’ planned recapture of Europe but to the whole of mankind.
And sorry. If you want to know what happens next, you’ve got to watch it …
From my own perspective, and certainly compared to other movie projects I’ve worked on, the whole thing went incredibly smoothly. I wrote the script within a month or so, Paul Campion edited and then added his own material and after that we were more or less ready to go.

As I say, we were raided mercilessly by online pirates. The commercial damage that stemmed from this was immense. It actually capsized the careers of several others involved and put me off dedicating any more of my time to future movie projects than I needed to. The film was thus unable to hit the financial heights that it should have despite the many glowing reviews it received.
